Infertility

What is infertility?

Although the terms sterility and infertility are often used synonymously, they actually mean different things. Infertility is the inability to carry out a pregnancy, as occurs in cases of recurrent abortions. Sterility is an absolute inability to become pregnant.

Why is infertility increasing?

Fertility and age

The deterioration of semen quality

Why I cannot get pregnant?

  • Ovulation does not occur or the oocytes are not suitable (capable of achieving a normal viable embryo).
  • Semen quality is insufficient: it does not contain enough good quality sperm with progressive motility to allow for the fertilization of the oocyte.
  • Blocked Fallopian tubes – either the sperm are not able to find their way to the released oocyte or the embryo cannot be transported to the uterine cavity.
  • Uterine abnormalities – fibroids, adenomyosis or congenital abnormalities of the uterus may significantly decrease the likelihood of a pregnancy.
  • The embryos do not have the appropriate chromosomal number required for a healthy pregnancy (often associated with advanced female and oocyte age)
