Each year, hundreds of fertility treatments using donated gametes, especially donor sperm, are performed in Finland. At Ovumia, we have been providing fertility treatments with donor sperm for over 25 years. Our goal is to offer a warm, high-quality care experience that helps make your dream of a family come true.
Treatments with donated sperm refer to fertility procedures that uses semen from an external, voluntary, and carefully screened donor. Before treatment begins, every patient receives donor gamete counselling, where legal, psychological, and ethical aspects are discussed in detail.
Throughout your treatment, you’ll be supported by a dedicated team, including a doctor, laboratory, and personal nurse. They will guide you through every step and are always available to answer your questions.
At Ovumia, we understand that there are many reasons why donor sperm may be needed. We truly hope we can help you achieve your dream of having a child.
We are here for you – don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

Our sperm donors are healthy men living in Finland who genuinely wish to help others. Many decide to donate because someone close to them has faced infertility. Although Finnish law allows a small financial compensation, the primary motivation is always the sincere desire to help. Only a small portion of applicants qualify as donors. Donors must have high-quality semen that tolerates freezing and pass strict health assessments.
Who are our sperm donors?
In Finland, all sperm donors are registered and identifiable. This means that a child conceived via donor gametes has the right, at the age of 18, to learn the donor’s identity. This information is given only to the adult child.
By law, recipients can only be told the donor’s ethnic background, height, and hair, eye, and skin color. You may also express your preferences for these characteristics. Our coordination team will find the best possible match for you based on your wishes.
Under Finnish law, a single donor’s gametes can result in children for only up to five different families. Donated sperm can be used for up to 15 years after freezing. You can read more about the legislation related fertility treatments here.
We can also order sperm from our partner, the European Sperm Bank. Even in these cases, the donor’s information is registered according to Finnish law, ensuring that any child born from the treatment can later trace their biological origins.
Artificial insemination is usually the first method of treatment when using donor sperm. The outcome depends on the woman’s age and other fertility-related factors. Before insemination, we may assess whether the fallopian tubes are open.
The chance of pregnancy after insemination is typically 10–15% per cycle, and most pregnancies occur within the first three to four cycles. For single women and female couples without other fertility concerns, success rates are often even higher.
The total cost of insemination with donor sperm consists of the donor sperm sample and the insemination procedure. Occasionally, ultrasound monitoring is required for timing ovulation, but often at-home ovulation tests are sufficient. At Ovumia, inseminations are performed by fertility doctors and, at some clinics, by specially trained midwives. One insemination with donor sperm costs approximately 695€ (co-pay approx. 475€) and a preliminary ultrasound examination 129€ if necessary. Additionally, there is a one-time fee for the initial consultation with one of our doctors 249€ (co-pay 179€) and donor gamete counseling pp€.
IVF (in vitro fertilization) offers significantly higher success rates (around 30–40% per embryo transfer). IVF is a very effective solution for many causes of infertility. For this reason, IVF is often recommended after a few insemination attempts, depending on your wishes and your doctor’s advice.
During the first doctor’s appointment, your general health and any previous pregnancies are reviewed. It’s important to assess the openness of the fallopian tubes. If risk factors for blockage exist, a tubal patency test (HSSG) is performed. Based on this, an initial treatment plan is created.
The law requires counseling before any donor gamete treatments. At Ovumia, this is led by a psychologist. Counseling can also be provided by a psychotherapist or infertility and IVF nurse.
After counseling, the sperm laboratory arranges donor selection. Next, you’ll have a treatment planning visit to finalize schedules, medications, and procedures.
is then performed according to plan, with insemination or IVF. If insemination is unsuccessful, the process can be continued with IVF.
