After male sterilization, or a vasectomy, it is recommended to give a follow-up semen sample at a fertility laboratory. The purpose of the follow-up is to ensure that sterilization has been fully achieved. Until the result is confirmed, another form of contraception is recommended. The post-vasectomy semen test is carried out in our dedicated sperm laboratory.
To confirm that the sterilization (vasectomy) has been effective, we recommend providing the first semen sample approximately three months after the procedure. At this point, the sample should contain no sperm, or at most some individual non-motile sperm cells that are no longer capable of fertilization. Your fresh semen sample is examined in our laboratory, and you will receive the results on the same day.
No referral is required for the semen analysis. The vasectomy follow-up can be performed no earlier than three months (12 weeks) after the procedure. Before providing the sample, we recommend having had enough ejaculations post-procedure (preferably a minimum of 20). The most recent ejaculation should have taken place 2–5 days before your appointment.
You will provide the sample in a private, dedicated collection room at your chosen Ovumia clinic. A sterile collection container will be provided by our sperm laboratory during your visit.
