Sperm freezing: Secure your future

None

Fertility preservation is often discussed in relation to women and egg freezing, but male fertility can also be affected by age, medical treatments and life circumstances. Sperm freezing (spermiefrysning) is a well‑established and safe method for preserving fertility and maintaining the possibility of biological parenthood in the future.

At Ovumia Stockholm, we offer discreet and efficient sperm freezing with long‑term storage in our modern laboratory environment. The process is medically proven, non‑invasive and tailored to your individual situation.

Why consider freezing sperm?

There are many medical and personal reasons why men choose to preserve their fertility through sperm freezing. Common reasons include:

  • Before medical treatments: Certain medical treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or some testicular or pelvic surgeries, can negatively affect sperm production. Freezing sperm before treatment begins helps preserve fertility options if you wish to have children later in life.

  • Before a vasectomy: Some men choose to freeze sperm prior to a vasectomy as a form of fertility insurance. Even if family planning feels complete today, circumstances may change in the future.

  • Changes in sperm quality: If a semen analysis shows reduced sperm concentration, motility or other changes over time, freezing sperm at an earlier stage may provide better conditions for future fertility treatment.

  • Occupational or lifestyle risks: Exposure to radiation, chemicals, extreme heat or physical risk can affect sperm quality. In these cases, proactive sperm freezing can offer reassurance and long‑term fertility preservation.

The sperm freezing process at Ovumia

Sperm freezing is a straightforward procedure carried out with care, privacy and medical precision:

  1. Medical testing: In accordance with Swedish regulations, blood tests are required before freezing and storage of reproductive cells. These tests screen for infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis B and C.

  2. Sample collection: The semen sample is provided at the clinic in a private room. To optimise sperm quality, we usually recommend 2–5 days of sexual abstinence prior to sample collection.

  3. Laboratory analysis: The sample is analysed by our embryology team to assess sperm concentration, motility and morphology, following established laboratory standards.

  4. Cryopreservation: The sperm is prepared with cryoprotective media and frozen in a controlled process before being stored in liquid nitrogen at −196 °C. This method preserves sperm cells for long‑term use in fertility treatment, such as IVF or ICSI.
