The idea of family has grown and evolved, and today many single women and female couples choose to start a family on their own terms. At Ovumia, we support all paths to parenthood with expertise, respect and care.
Taking the first step can feel significant, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. With the right guidance and a clear treatment plan, your journey can begin in a calm and well-supported way.
One of the advantages at Ovumia is our own high-quality gamete bank, which enables you to start treatment without unnecessary delays.
For single women and female couples, fertility treatment is based on the use of donor sperm. Ovumia operates its own Finnish sperm bank, where all donors are carefully selected and screened.
Donors undergo thorough medical, genetic and psychological assessments in line with Finnish legislation on assisted fertility treatments. This ensures both safety and high quality treatment throughout the process.
Our experienced coordinators will guide you in choosing a suitable donor. In Finland, gamete donation is non-anonymous from the child’s perspective, meaning that the child has the right to access identifying information about the donor upon reaching adulthood.
Because the sperm bank is part of Ovumia, there is no need to wait for availability—treatment planning can move forward without delay.
Your treatment plan is always individual and begins with a first visit. During this appointment, we assess your situation through a fertility assessment that typically includes a gynecological ultrasound and hormone testing, such as the AMH test.
Based on these results, we recommend the most suitable treatment approach:
Intrauterine insemination (IUI): If your ovarian reserve is sufficient and your fallopian tubes are open, treatment often begins with intrauterine insemination. In this procedure, prepared donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus at the optimal time in your cycle, increasing the chances of fertilisation.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): If insemination is not successful or if there are factors such as blocked fallopian tubes or conditions like endometriosis affecting fertility, IVF treatment may be recommended. In IVF, eggs are collected from the ovaries, fertilised with donor sperm in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus.
Throughout your treatment, our specialists will closely monitor your progress and adjust the plan when needed.
In this form of IVF treatment, one partner undergoes ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. The eggs are fertilised with donor sperm, and the resulting embryo is transferred to the uterus of the other partner, who carries the pregnancy.
This process highlights a shared experience:
One partner contributes eggs, acting as the genetic mother.
The other partner receives the embryo, acting as the gestational mother.
This approach allows both partners to be physically involved in the process, creating a deeply shared experience of parenthood.
Kela (the Finnish Social Insurance Institution) bases its reimbursements on medical diagnoses. If you are seeking treatment solely because you do not have a male partner, Kela does not currently reimburse the costs. However, if our initial examinations uncover an underlying medical issue causing infertility (such as PCOS or endometriosis), Kela reimbursements apply.
You can start almost immediately. Because we utilize our own sperm bank, there are no waiting lists. Once the initial check-up is done and a donor is selected, treatment can often begin with your next menstrual cycle.
Whether you are starting this journey independently or with your partner, the first step is simple. You can book a first visit with one of our experienced doctors. We will listen to your wishes, assess your fertility and map out a clear, transparent plan for your treatment.
