The definition of a family has beautifully evolved, and today, an increasing number of children are born to single women by choice and female couples. At Ovumia, we proudly support diverse family structures. We understand that starting this journey requires courage, planning, and the right medical partner.
Because we have our own high-quality gamete bank, you can begin your fertility treatments with donor sperm immediately—without the frustration of long public-sector waiting lists.
The foundation of treatments for single women and female couples is the use of donor sperm. Ovumia operates its own Finnish sperm bank. All our donors are healthy men who have undergone rigorous psychological, genetic, and medical screening in accordance with the Finnish Act on Assisted Fertility Treatments.
Our coordinators will help you choose a suitable donor. Under Finnish law, gamete donation is non-anonymous to the child, meaning the child has the right to learn the donor's identity when they turn 18.
The right treatment path is always chosen individually during your First Visit, based on a thorough fertility assessment (including an ultrasound and AMH hormone test).
Insemination (IUI): If your fallopian tubes are open and you have a healthy ovarian reserve, we often start with intrauterine insemination. Washed donor sperm is gently placed into the uterus precisely at the time of ovulation.
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): If IUI is not successful, or if tests reveal challenges like blocked fallopian tubes or endometriosis, we move to IVF. Eggs are retrieved, fertilized with donor sperm in our laboratory, and the best embryo is transferred to the uterus.
For female couples, Ovumia offers a unique and deeply shared experience: the ROPA method (Reception of Oocytes from Partner).
In this reciprocal IVF process, one partner undergoes hormonal stimulation and egg retrieval. The retrieved eggs are fertilized with donor sperm. The resulting embryo is then transferred into the uterus of the other partner, who will carry the pregnancy and give birth. This allows both women to be physically and biologically involved in the creation of their child—one as the genetic mother and the other as the gestational mother.
Kela (the Finnish Social Insurance Institution) bases its reimbursements on medical diagnoses. If you are seeking treatment solely because you do not have a male partner, Kela does not currently reimburse the costs. However, if our initial examinations uncover an underlying medical issue causing infertility (such as PCOS or endometriosis), Kela reimbursements apply.
You can start almost immediately. Because we utilize our own sperm bank, there are no waiting lists. Once the initial check-up is done and a donor is selected, treatment can often begin with your next menstrual cycle.
Whether you are starting this journey independently or with your partner, the first step is simple. Book a First Visit (Ensikäynti) with our specialists. We will listen to your wishes, assess your fertility, and map out a clear, transparent plan for your future.
