After years of fertility treatment, unsuccessful attempts and a great deal of difficult news, it became clear that the path to parenthood would look different from what she had expected. Through egg donation at Ovumia Stockholm, she and her partner were given a new opportunity to fulfil their dream of starting a family. Here, they share their decision to move forward with donated eggs, the emotions they experienced along the way and the joy of finally holding their long-awaited child in their arms.
Yes, ever since I was young, I have always dreamed of having children and a big family.
Yes. I first underwent around 12 cycles of treatment with letrozole, which resulted in a missed miscarriage. We then continued with publicly funded IVF. Two egg retrievals produced 30 eggs but no embryos. Before coming to Ovumia, we had been to two other clinics in Stockholm.
Not much, really, beyond what I had found by searching online—and then you do not really know what information is accurate. However, I did know that the child has the right to find out who the donor is if they wish.
Because I had never become pregnant naturally and our fertility treatments indicated poor egg quality, I felt that I did not have the strength to keep trying with my own eggs and face repeated disappointment. I wanted to give my partner and myself a real chance of achieving a pregnancy and fulfilling our dream of becoming parents.
We researched several clinics ourselves because we decided to seek private treatment while waiting for our referral for publicly funded egg donation to be approved. We wanted to find a clinic with short waiting times for a donor that could also guarantee a certain number of embryos. We chose Ovumia because it has its own egg bank, so we would not have to wait as long. We were tired of the endless waiting and had already spent several years on the IVF rollercoaster.
Yes, I had many questions and thoughts. To sum up all those questions and emotions, much of it came down to wondering whether I would ever become a parent. That is an impossible question to answer, especially for someone with reduced fertility. The uncertainty has been the most difficult part for me to manage.
I felt that the clinic took our wishes into account, and the process was smooth. You are not given very much information about the donor. Only when the child is born do you see whether the physical match has been successful and whether you share similar features. For me, however, the donor’s appearance — or my child’s appearance, for that matter — was not particularly important. What mattered to me was being able to become a mother.
We were among the clinic’s first couples to undergo treatment in 2024, so there were some uncertainties at the beginning. We felt there was some uncertainty around how the treatment was organised. However, we have now returned to the clinic to try for a sibling and have experienced an enormous difference. The treatment has been structured and clear. The staff, however, have always been very professional and caring.
I also appreciate that it is always easy to reach the clinic quickly, both by phone and through messages. This has meant a great deal to me, as I had many worries and questions during the treatment process.
I moved between hope and despair and carried a great deal of worry, as well as a lack of trust in my own body. There were many difficult emotions before I finally had a child in my arms. I am so grateful.
Overall, I feel that Ovumia was very good at providing support and responding to all my questions and worries throughout the process. A special thank you to the midwife Lena, who will always have a special place in my heart.
Not to worry so much, and to trust the process and the treatment.
