Sperm Bank in Finland: How Donor Sperm Treatments Are Planned at Ovumia

None

The need for donor sperm can arise for a variety of reasons. For heterosexual couples, severe male-factor infertility (where no sperm can be retrieved) can make donor treatments the only viable path to parenthood. Additionally, treatments using donor sperm are the foundation of family building for single women and female couples.

Whatever your situation, starting treatments with donated gametes is a major life decision. At Ovumia, we ensure the process is safe, legally transparent, and highly successful. Because we operate our own Finnish sperm bank, you can begin your journey immediately.

Ovumia's in-house sperm bank: high quality, no waiting lists

A significant challenge in public healthcare is the chronic shortage of donor gametes, which often leads to long waiting lists. At Ovumia clinics, this barrier is removed.

We maintain our own extensive, high-quality sperm bank. This means that once your initial fertility assessment is complete and a treatment plan is established, we can match you with a suitable donor right away, allowing treatments to begin without unnecessary delays.

Who are the sperm donors and how are they screened?

The safety and health of the future child are our absolute priorities. All our sperm donors are healthy men residing in Finland who want to help others experience the joy of parenthood.

Before a man is accepted into our sperm bank, he undergoes a rigorous screening process in accordance with the Finnish Act on Assisted Fertility Treatments. This includes:

  • Semen Analysis: To ensure optimal sperm count, motility, and morphology.

  • Infectious Disease Testing: Strict blood and urine tests to rule out HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

  • Health and Genetic Screening: A thorough review of personal and family medical history to rule out severe hereditary diseases.

  • Psychological Evaluation: A mandatory interview with our therapist to ensure the donor fully understands the legal and emotional implications of his donation.

Donor matching and anonymity laws in Finland

According to Finnish legislation, sperm donation is non-anonymous to the child. This means that a child born from donated sperm has the right to find out the identity of the donor upon turning 18.

However, the donation is strictly anonymous between the donor and the recipient parents. The donor has no legal rights or financial obligations regarding the child. When matching you with a donor, our coordinators will use your physical characteristics (such as eye color, hair color, and height) to find the most suitable match, adhering to the guidelines of the Finnish fertility law.
