Embryo transfer

An embryo transfer can be carried out either as a fresh transfer following egg retrieval or as a frozen embryo transfer.

A frozen embryo transfer can be performed in an ovulatory cycle, where the timing is based on your natural ovulation, or in a medically supported cycle. In an ovulatory cycle, the optimal transfer day may occasionally fall on a weekend, in which case the transfer cannot be performed.

The procedure is carried out under ultrasound guidance. You will be asked to arrive with a full bladder to improve visibility during the procedure. A thin embryo transfer catheter is gently passed into the uterine cavity, and the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

Embryo transfer is usually painless, and you can return to your normal daily activities and work afterwards.

A pregnancy test is performed approximately two weeks after the transfer.

If appropriate, a specialised transfer medium, such as EmbryoGlue, may be used to support embryo implantation. You can discuss whether this may be suitable for you with your doctor.
