Donor sperm treatment

Who is donor sperm treatment suitable for?

  • Heterosexual couples

  • Female couples
  • Single women

Donor sperm treatment is most commonly used by female couples and single women. For heterosexual couples, it may be recommended if no sperm are present, if sperm quality is very poor, or if the male partner carries a genetic variant associated with a hereditary condition.

How does donor sperm treatment work?

Treatment begins with an appointment with a fertility specialist. During the consultation, we will explain the treatment process and discuss the medical and legal aspects of treatment with donated gametes.

You will then attend donor gamete counselling, where you will have the opportunity to discuss the psychological and emotional aspects of donor treatment.

During your consultation, your doctor will recommend the most suitable treatment option: either insemination or IVF treatment. The choice of treatment depends on factors such as age, whether the fallopian tubes are open and any other factors that may affect fertility. Insemination is a less intensive treatment than IVF, while IVF generally offers a higher chance of success. Another advantage of IVF is that a single straw of donor sperm can be used to fertilise several eggs, whereas in insemination one straw is typically used for a single ovulated egg.

Before treatment begins, the individual or couple receiving treatment signs the required treatment consent forms. Those who sign the consent become the child’s legal parents.

Choosing a sperm donor

When selecting a suitable donor, the following physical characteristics permitted under Finnish law may be taken into account: ethnic background, skin colour, hair colour, eye colour and height.

Under Finnish law, children conceived using gametes from the same donor may be born into a maximum of five different families in Finland.

Ovumia has its own sperm bank. Donor sperm can also be ordered through the Danish European Sperm Bank.

Treatment costs

The cost of treatment depends both on the type of treatment and on whether donor sperm from Ovumia’s own sperm bank or from the European Sperm Bank is used.

An annual storage fee applies to reserved donor sperm. You may choose to maintain the reservation if you would like to keep the option of using the same donor for a future sibling.
