Donor egg treatment may be an option when using your own eggs is not possible or is unlikely to lead to pregnancy. This may be due to factors such as age-related decline in ovarian reserve, poor egg quality or a genetic condition.
How does donor egg treatment work?
Treatment begins with an appointment with a fertility specialist. During the consultation, we will explain the treatment process and discuss the medical and legal aspects of treatment with donated gametes.
You will then attend donor conception counselling, where you will have the opportunity to discuss the psychological and emotional aspects of treatment with donated gametes.
After the counselling, you will select a suitable donor together with your treatment coordinator.
Donor egg treatment can be carried out in two ways. With fresh donor eggs, the eggs are fertilised on the day they are collected from the donor. Alternatively, frozen donor eggs from an egg bank can be thawed and fertilised at an agreed time.
The fertilised eggs are cultured in the laboratory until they develop into embryos. The embryo transfer is then timed according to your natural ovulation cycle, or the lining of the uterus is prepared for the transfer with medication.
What happens to the remaining embryos?
Any suitable additional embryos are frozen for possible future use.
