Getting pregnant as a single woman: your options from insemination to IVF

None

The definition of family has broadened, and today more women are choosing to begin their journey to motherhood independently. Becoming a single mother by choice is a considered and intentional decision. At Ovumia Stockholm, we provide safe, evidence‑based and compassionate fertility care tailored specifically for single women.

If you are ready to take the first step, there is no need to wait. With immediate access to donor sperm through our own Nordic gamete bank, you can begin your family planning without the long waiting times often associated with public healthcare.

Immediate access to open sperm donors

Fertility treatment for single women is based on the use of donated sperm. Although single women have been entitled to publicly funded fertility care in Sweden since 2016, the limited availability of sperm donors within the public system often leads to waiting times of one to two years.

At Ovumia Stockholm, this delay can be avoided. Because we operate our own extensive Nordic sperm and gamete bank, you have immediate access to carefully screened, legally approved open sperm donors. Treatment can begin as soon as your initial fertility assessment has been completed.

Your treatment options: IUI and IVF

The choice of treatment is always individual and based on a thorough fertility assessment. This includes gynecological ultrasound and blood tests to analyse hormone balance and egg reserve. You will discuss your treatment plan with our specialized doctors to define the right treatment plan for you. Your treatment options include:

  • Insemination (IUI) with Donor Sperm: For single women with open fallopian tubes, a satisfactory ovarian reserve and no significant fertility‑limiting factors, intrauterine insemination (IUI) is often the first recommended treatment. During IUI, prepared donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus in close connection with ovulation. This is a gentle and well‑established treatment option.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with Donor Sperm:  If insemination does not lead to pregnancy, if the fallopian tubes are blocked or if ovarian reserve is reduced, IVF may offer a higher chance of success per treatment cycle. Eggs are retrieved, then fertilized with donor sperm in the laborator  and the embryo with the best development potential is transferred to the uterus.
  • Double Donation: For women who are unable to conceive using their own eggs, often due to age‑related egg quality factors, Ovumia also offers double donation. This treatment uses both donated eggs and donated sperm to optimise the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
