How to prepare for your first fertility consultation?

Your first visit to a fertility clinic is an important step towards the pregnancy you hope for. Being well prepared helps you get the most out of the appointment and can make the situation feel calmer and more reassuring.

  • Complete the pre-appointment form: Please fill in the form on our website before your first visit. Receiving your information in advance allows our doctor to review it before your appointment.
  • Share previous medical documents: If you have had tests or fertility treatment at another clinic, we kindly ask you to send the relevant documents to us, if possible, before your appointment—or bring them with you to your first visit. This helps the doctor get a clearer overview of your situation and makes planning the next steps smoother.
  • Semen analysis: For men, we recommend having a semen analysis done before the first appointment if it hasn’t been done before, or if more than a year has passed since the previous analysis.

You’re also welcome to an initial consultation if you’ve had tests or treatment at another clinic. In that case, our doctor will review your previous test results and treatment, and discuss further treatment options with you at Ovumia—based on your wishes and your current situation.

What to expect from an initial fertility consultation?

At your first visit, you’ll meet with our fertility specialist, who will provide an overview of your fertility and treatment options. If you’re in a relationship and planning a baby together, we recommend attending the first appointment with your partner. This way, your partner will also get a clear overview of your situation and the treatment options, and feel included throughout the process. Attending together also helps the doctor gain a comprehensive understanding of your medical history and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

If you wish to become a parent on your own, you’re welcome to come to the appointment by yourself or with a support person. You always make all decisions about your treatment and its timing—our role is to advise and support you on this journey.

During the initial consultation:

  • Discussion with the doctor: the doctor will have a thorough conversation with you about your health, lifestyle, and other factors that may affect fertility. It’s important to us that you feel heard during your visit and can speak openly with the doctor about your concerns, expectations, and wishes.
  • Health assessment: If needed, a gynaecological examination and ultrasound scan will be performed during the appointment.
  • Individual treatment plan: Based on the discussion and examinations, the doctor will provide an initial overview of possible treatment options and discuss the next steps with you.
  • Getting to know our team: You’ll learn how our clinic works and also meet Ovumia’s midwives and nurses, who will support you throughout the treatment process.
