After male sterilization, or a vasectomy, it is recommended to give a follow-up semen sample at a fertility laboratory. The purpose of the follow-up is to ensure that sterilization has been fully achieved. Until the result is confirmed, another form of contraception is recommended. The post-vasectomy semen test is carried out in our dedicated sperm laboratory. You can have your vasectomy follow-up at any Ovumia clinic in Jyväskylä, Tampere, Kuopio or Helsinki.
Timing of the test
We recommend providing your first semen sample approximately three months after the procedure to confirm that the vasectomy has been effective.
Expected result
At this stage, the sample should contain no sperm, or only a small number of non-motile sperm cells that are no longer capable of fertilization.
Results delivery
Your fresh semen sample is examined immediately in our laboratory, and you will receive your results on the same day.
No referral is required.
The follow-up test can be done no earlier than 12 weeks after the procedure.
Before testing, we recommend at least 20 ejaculations after the vasectomy.
Your most recent ejaculation should be 2–5 days before your appointment.
You will provide the sample in a private collection room at your chosen Ovumia clinic.
A sterile container will be provided by the laboratory during your visit.
