A gynecologist, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology, is an expert in women’s health, gynecological conditions, such as endometriosis, menstrual cycle irregularities, and menopausal symptoms. A dedicated gynecologist will be a trusted health expert throughout a woman’s life.
At Ovumia, our gynecologists are experienced, compassionate and approachable women’s health experts. Their aim is to create a warm and trusting environment to ensure your gynecology visit feels safe and comfortable.
You can turn to a gynecologist with any questions concerning women’s health, from contraception and fertility planning to menopause care. Many patients come when they experience a new symptom they want to understand, such as pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding or changes in their menstrual cycle. Hormone therapy may also require regular visits. We also provide early pregnancy ultrasounds up to week 12 at our clinics.
Your visit begins with a discussion about your health and current concerns. The gynecologist will evaluate your overall wellbeing and perform a gynecological examination and an ultrasound if necessary. Breast examination may also be included. Each visit is individually tailored to your needs.
Small procedures can be performed during the appointment, such as insertion or removal of a contraceptive implant or IUD. Samples may be taken when necessary, including smear tests, STI tests, endometrial samples (Pipelle), and blood tests. A typical appointment lasts 20–30 minutes. If you expect to discuss multiple issues or think you may need extra time, we recommend mentioning this when booking the appointment. Double slots are available.
Some matters may require follow-up. If samples were taken, results usually arrive within a few days. Necessary follow-ups are planned together with your doctor. If further monitoring or repeat testing is needed, your doctor will arrange this and ensure you receive clear guidance.
You and your doctor can also agree on how results are delivered. You may agree that results are discussed over the phone. If any results are abnormal, your doctor will ensure you receive all information and guidance on how to proceed.
If something remains unclear after the visit, you are always welcome to request a doctor’s call-back through our appointment services.
Our gynecologists also specialize in fertility and reproductive health. If you have any questions regarding your fertility, you can book a fertility assessment.
A fertility assessment is a 45–60-minute specialist appointment, aimed for those who are wondering about their fertility or have questions about family planning. The appointment includes a gynecological examination and ultrasound. This visit also serves as your annual gynecology check-up.
If you have been trying to conceive for over a year, we recommend booking an initial consultation with a fertility specialist instead.
The need for routine check-ups is individual. You can discuss the recommended timeline with your gynecologist. Any unusual or new symptoms are always a reason to book an appointment promptly.
A Pap test screens for cervical cancer and its precursors by collecting cells from the cervix with a small brush. The procedure is usually painless, though mild spotting may occur afterward. In Finland, women aged 30–65 are invited for screening every five years unless there is a medical reason for more frequent testing. A reflex Pap test, which first checks for high-risk HPV, may be used for more accurate detection. If you have gynecological symptoms, you can book a Pap test at any time.
Yeast infections are common and usually caused by Candida albicans, a naturally occurring fungus that has overgrown. Typical symptoms include itching, burning, and thick white discharge, though it can sometimes be grey or watery, with redness on the external genitalia. Itching does not always mean yeast infection—only about half of cases are due to yeast. If you have had a yeast infection before, you may self-treat, but recurring infections need medical evaluation to identify underlying causes, such as certain medications or dry mucosa.
