The success rate for egg donation treatment at Ovumia clinics exceeds 50% from the first embryo transfer.
Sometimes pregnancy with own gametes (eggs / sperm) is not possible and then a donation from a gamete donor is a gift of a lifetime. Ovumia clinics perform over 70% of all donor egg treatments in Finland.
The team responsible for the treatments includes doctors, embryologists and nurses - we support you throughout the process. Our goal is a supportive, compassionate and trust-based treatment experience for both the client as well as the donor.
In donor egg treatments, eggs donated by a voluntary person – are used when achieving a pregnancy with one’s own gametes is not possible.
In donor egg treatment, the donor’s egg is fertilized in a laboratory with either the partner’s sperm or donor sperm. The resulting embryo is then transferred to the uterus of the expectant mother.
Donor egg therapy can be a solution in many life situations. It is commonly used when pregnancy with one’s own eggs is not possible, for example due to:
Advanced female age
Poor egg quality
Several previous unsuccessful IVF treatments
Recurrent miscarriages
A known risk of a serious hereditary disease when using one’s own eggs
IVF with donated eggs may be an option when pregnancy with one’s own eggs is not possible or has not been successful.
This treatment may be suitable if:
Before starting treatment, every patient receives an individual medical evaluation to ensure that IVF with donated eggs is the most appropriate option.
The first step in the donor egg treatment process is the initial doctor's appointment. The medical prerequisites for safety of the treatment, the course of treatment and prognosis are reviewed. The legal aspects of the treatment are explained to the woman or couple receiving treatment. Plenty of time is reserved for any questions you may have.
Donor gamete treatments can only be performed following a counselling session, this is a requirement by the Finnish law. The counseling is usually a one-time appointment either at the clinic or as a remote appointment.
Our donor egg coordinator will work toward identifying a suitable donor that matches your requests as well as possible.
At the donor egg coordinator's appointment, the final agreement of the donor is done together with the coordinator.
The recipient can choose whether fresh or frozen eggs are used in the treatment.
Once a suitable egg donor has been agreed upon, our physician will put together an individualized treatment plan for the recipient. During this appointment, the recipient will receive detailed information regarding the required medication and the treatmentschedule. Our nurses will provide the necessary care instructions and guide the recipient on how to use the medication correctly.
Following the treatment planning, the recipient's treatment can begin according to the individualized treatment plan.
Fresh eggs:
The donor begins hormonal stimulation according to the agreed schedule,
and the sperm sample is provided on the day of the egg retrieval.
Frozen eggs:
The selected batch of eggs is thawed on a pre-scheduled day and fertilized on the same day using either fresh sperm (the recommended option) or frozen sperm.
Regardless of the chosen method, our nurses will keep the recipient informed of the treatment's progress. The embryo
transfer is performed in the same way as in a standard IVF treatment. The recipient can take a pregnancy test approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer.

Our donors undergo hormonal stimulation in order to obtain enough good-quality eggs for treatment without endangering the donor’s health.
According to Finnish law, donors may receive a small reimbursement, but the primary motivation for donating is the genuine desire to help others. We take good care of our donors, which is why many choose to donate again.
In Finland, egg donors are registered and non-anonymous. This means that a person conceived through donor treatment has the legal right to learn the donor’s identity after turning 18. This information can only be released to the child.
Recipients of donated eggs are entitled to receive information about the donor’s ethnic origin, height, and eye and hair color. Our donor coordinator will select the best possible donor for you.
Donated gametes can be used for 15 years from the date of freezing.
There is a limited number of donated embryos available. These embryos are donated by couples who have already had the number of children they hoped for through fertility treatment, or who for personal reasons have chosen not to use their remaining embryos.
By donating their frozen embryos, these couples wish to help others who are struggling with infertility.
Couples who choose to donate embryos go through a medical evaluation and meet with a therapist who explains the psychological and ethical aspects of embryo donation.
In addition, donors are tested with blood samples for:
Basic chromosome structure
Infectious diseases
The price of the treatment is affected by several factors, such as whether fresh or frozen donor eggs are used, how many embryos are obtained, how complex package is chosen. The use of donor sperm will also affect the price of the treatment.
In treatments using your own gametes, the patient’s own eggs and/or partner’s sperm are used, and the success depends on their quality.
In donor gamete treatment, the eggs or sperm come from a donor — this option is chosen when pregnancy with one’s own gametes is not possible or the chances of success are very low.
