Each year, hundreds of fertility treatments using donated gametes, especially donor sperm, are performed in Finland. At Ovumia, we have been providing fertility treatments with donor sperm for over 25 years. Our goal is to offer a compassionate, high-quality care experience that helps make your dream of a family come true.
Treatments with donated sperm refer to fertility procedures that uses sperm from an external, voluntary, and carefully screened donor. Before treatment begins, every patient receives donor gamete counselling, where legal, psychological, and ethical aspects are discussed in detail.
Throughout your treatment, you’ll be supported by a dedicated team, including a doctor, laboratory, and personal nurse. They will guide you through every step and are always available to answer your questions.
At Ovumia, we understand that there are many reasons why donor sperm may be needed. We truly hope we can help you achieve your dream of having a child.
We are here for you – don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Our sperm donors are healthy men living in Finland who genuinely wish to help others. Many decide to donate because someone close to them has faced infertility. Although Finnish law allows a small financial compensation, the primary motivation is always the sincere desire to help. Only a small portion of applicants qualify as donors. Donors must have high-quality semen that tolerates freezing and pass strict health assessments.
Trust and transparency are the foundations of our donor programs. Finland’s legislation ensures ethical certainty through an open-identity system, which safeguards the child's right to know their biological origins while respecting the anonymity of the parents. In Finland, all egg and sperm donors are registered in a national registry.
In Finland, all sperm donors are registered and identifiable. Any child conceived via donor gametes has the non-negotiable right, at the age of 18, to learn the donor’s identity. This sensitive information is provided only to the adult child.
By law, recipients receive only non-identifying information (ethnic background, height, color), and our team works to find the best match based on your preferences. To ensure genetic diversity and compliance, a single donor's gametes can result in children for a maximum of five different families under Finnish law.
To expand your options, we also source sperm from our partner, the European Sperm Bank. Critically, all donor information is registered and processed strictly according to Finnish open-identity law, guaranteeing the child’s right to trace their biological origins later in life.
Artificial insemination is usually the first method of treatment when using donor sperm. The outcome depends on the woman’s age and other fertility-related factors. Before insemination, we may assess whether the fallopian tubes are open.
The chance of pregnancy after insemination is typically 10–15% per cycle, and most pregnancies occur within the first three to four cycles. For single women and female couples without other fertility concerns, success rates are often even higher. The total cost of insemination with donor sperm consists of the donor sperm sample and the insemination procedure. Occasionally, ultrasound monitoring is required for timing ovulation, but often at-home ovulation tests are sufficient. At Ovumia, inseminations are performed by fertility doctors and, at some clinics, by specially trained midwives.
IVF (in vitro fertilization) offers significantly higher success rates (around 30–40% per embryo transfer). IVF is a very effective solution for many causes of infertility. For this reason, IVF is often recommended after a few insemination attempts, depending on your wishes and your doctor’s advice.
During the first doctor’s appointment, your general health and any previous pregnancies are reviewed. It’s important to assess the openness of the fallopian tubes. If risk factors for blockage exist, a tubal patency test (HSSG) is performed. Based on this, an initial treatment plan is created.
The law requires counseling before treatments involving donor gametes. At Ovumia, this counseling is provided by a psychologist, and if necessary, it can also be conducted by a psychotherapist or an infertility and IVF nurse
After counseling, the sperm laboratory arranges donor selection. Next, you’ll have a treatment planning visit to finalize schedules, medications, and procedures.
Treatment continues with insemination. Insemination is a fertility procedure where prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation to facilitate fertilization. If insemination is unsuccessful, the process can be continued with IVF.
