What are fertility treatments?

At Ovumia, we offer a broad selection of fertility treatment options. Many wonder how effective fertility treatments are. We are happy to share that treatments today are very effective: up to 80% of our patients achieve pregnancy with the treatment options we offer.

The most common fertility treatments in Finland

There are several different types of fertility treatments. At Ovumia, our experienced specialists will recommend the most suitable treatment option for you after a thorough health assessment, always considering your wishes and circumstances.

Explore the most common fertility treatments:

  • Ovulation Induction (OI) – Medication is used to stimulate egg maturation and trigger ovulation if it does not occur regularly on its own. Most often, a simple tablet treatment is sufficient.
  • Insemination (IUI) – Selected sperm are inserted into the uterus using a thin catheter during ovulation to increase the chances of fertilization.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – After hormonal stimulation, eggs are collected from the ovaries, fertilized in the laboratory, and an embryo is transferred into the uterus to continue developing.
  • Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) – A single sperm is injected directly into an egg, which is especially helpful when sperm quality is reduced.
  • Use of Donor Gametes – Donated eggs or sperm are used when one’s own gametes cannot be used.
  • Embryo Freezing and Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) – Frozen embryos from a previous treatment can be transferred to the uterus later without the need for a new hormonal stimulation cycle.

When to seek fertility treatment?

What factors affect the success of fertility treatments?

The causes of infertility are typically divided into three main categories:

  • female-related causes (approximately 30% of cases),
  • male-related causes (approximately 30% of cases)
  • combined or unexplained causes (approximately 30% of cases).
  • Many factors affect the success of fertility treatments, the most important being the woman’s age – the success rate of fertility treatments declines for women after the age of 35. Other factors affecting the success rate of treatment include:
  • Male age – fertility begins to decline from 50 years of age
  • Body weight – both underweight and overweight can make conception more difficult and increase pregnancy complications
  • Underlying health conditions such as diabetes, untreated celiac disease, autoimmune diseases, past cancer, endometriosis, or PCOS can decline fertility
  • Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol use, and hormones
  • Combined causes, where both partners have minor fertility issues that together make conception more difficult
  • Sometimes there is no clear cause found, in which case egg and sperm interaction may be the issue
