We offer all the support you need for donation and, as the pioneer of donation, the latest know-how and the best care.
Give a gift of life – donate sperm. Please, fill out the preliminary information form and we`ll contact you.
You may become a sperm donor if you`re a healthy 20-45 -year-old man and there are no hereditary diseases in your close family. Prior to donation, we carefully assess your health status and any obstacles to donation. All the advice and consultation, examinations and clinic visits are free of charge.
From the examinations, you will get valuable data on your own fertility. We ensure that you`ll get accurate and clear information on the stages of donation. It is important to us that donors feel heard and safe.
Donated sperm is needed by couples (heterosexual and female couples) and single women. A reason for use of donated sperm may be for example absence of sperm cells, poor sperm quality, or a genetic disease in the recipient patient. Sperm donation is a precious gift that can enable a small miracle of life. Would you like to help?
Act on Fertility Treatments and sperm donation
According to the Act on Fertility Treatments, every sperm and egg donor is registered in the official register maintained by the Finnish Social and Health Licensing and Supervision Agency (LVV) to enable a child born from donated gametes, upon reaching the age of 18, to receive the donor's identity information. A sperm donor does not have rights or obligations towards the child.
A donor stays anonymous to the recipient patients. The recipient can only know the characteristics of a donor, his height, the color of his skin, hair and eyes as well as the ethnic background. In Finland in total five different recipient families can have children with sperm of the same donor. A sperm donor can withdraw his donation consent at any stage without a reason but with no effect on treatments that were already done.
Many fertility clinics use sperm from international sperm banks. Ovumia has its own sperm bank, and most of our donors are Finnish. Donor characteristics, such as skin, hair and eye color, and ethnic background, guide the matching of donors to recipients.
Yes, you can. All healthy men who wish to help couples and single women hoping for a child are welcome to become donors. Donor–recipient compatibility is determined based on external characteristics (height, eye, hair and skin color). Ovumia treats clients from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, both from Finland and abroad, which is why we also need donors from diverse backgrounds. You must have a Finnish tax card.
Please, start by filling out the preliminary information form (sperm donor interview / medical form) to find out if you are suitable as a sperm donor candidate. We`ll review the form and contact you.
A sperm sample is given at the clinic to examine the sperm quality. We recommend 1-3 days of abstinence (no ejaculations) prior to giving the sperm sample. If the result of sperm analysis is normal, we`ll reserve for you a doctor`s appointment.
Your completed health questionnaire is reviewed, and the donation process is thoroughly discussed.
At doctor`s appointment, you`ll get information on stages of donation, laboratory tests needed as well as legal aspects of donation, and you`ll have an opportunity to ask questions on donation. During the visit, a consent to sperm donation is signed. Usually, blood and urine samples are taken at the visit and you`ll meet our nurse.
Once the test results are available (after 2-4 weeks), we´ll contact you on appointment of donation visits according to your own wishes. We recommend 2-3 donation visits per week.
Approximately 10 sperm donation visits are taken at the clinic. The recommended time of abstinence (no ejaculations) is 1-3 days prior to each donation. At required time points of donation process, we`ll take additional blood and urine samples.
Once the donation is completed, the donated sperm is released for use in fertility treatments.
Yes, you can revoke your donation but without an effect on the treatments in which your sperm was already used for fertilization. It is not possible to revoke use of embryos that were created with sperm donated by you. A sperm donor can restrict the use of sperm for example to allow only treatments of couples or for treatment of a disease.
You get compensation for each donation visit as regulated by the Finnish legislation. The most valuable reward, however, is the knowledge that by donating you can help those hoping to have a child and to achieve the parenthood they have long awaited.
Donation of gametes is regulated by the Act on Fertility Treatments. Every donor is registered in national registry.
According to the Act on Fertility Treatments, a child born after the use of donated sperm, once turned 18 years, is entitled to know donor`s identity. The donor has no legal rights or obligations towards the child. The parents of the child are supported to openly share with the child his/her genetic origin. The parents of the child do not have the right to know the donor´s identity.
