Gamete donation

Ovumia is a pioneer in donor gamete treatments

Why gamete donation matters

Who can donate – requirements and criteria

Becoming a donor requires a careful suitability assessment.
Below are the most common criteria:

  • Health: No significant illnesses or increased risk of hereditary diseases
  • Age: Egg donors should be women aged 20–35; sperm donors men aged 20–45
  • Good psychological readiness: Understanding of the donation process, potential risks, and a genuine wish to help
  • Biological suitability: Donors do not need to have children of their own, but their fertility must be confirmed as good (ultrasound and AMH test for women, semen analysis for men)
  • Life situation: For example, egg donors cannot be pregnant during donation

The process — what to expect

Initial assessment and information gathering

Anyone interested in becoming a donor fills out a preliminary information form covering lifestyle, health, and background. If no obstacles are identified, an appointment for further examinations is booked.

Semen analysis / AMH test

In addition to the basic semen analysis, sperm are test-frozen and thawed. Women have an AMH blood test to assess fertility. If results are good, a doctor’s appointment is scheduled.

Doctor's appointment

At doctor`s appointment donor candidate`s health and lifestyle are reviewed. The requirements for donation, the procedure, potential risks, and legal aspects are explained. The donor candidate can ask questions about the donation process. After the appointment, blood samples are collected. Women get ultrasound assessment of ovaries and uterus, and gynecological treatment is done.

Suitability decision

Before being accepted as a donor, the candidate will consult with our specialist experienced in gamete donation. If no obstacles are identified during the screenings or consultations, the doctor will make the final decision regarding their acceptance as a donor.

The donation procedure

Egg donation: Hormonal stimulation of the ovaries, followed by egg retrieval.
Sperm donation: Semen collection.

Follow-up and recovery (egg donation)

After egg retrieval, a nurse will call to check your wellbeing and ensure that recovery is progressing normally. Menstruation usually begins 1–2 weeks after retrieval.

Use in fertility treatments

The donated gametes are used for the recipient according to their treatment plan. Eggs may be fertilised with sperm on the day of retrieval (fresh cycle) or they may be frozen for later use.
