Region-funded IVF

How the process works at Ovumia Stockholm

What does region-funded IVF mean?

Who can receive region-funded IVF?

Although the exact criteria depend on the region, the following factors are typically considered:

  • Age: The person undergoing treatment is usually required to be under 40 years of age when treatment begins.
  • Medical reasons: Funding can be granted if pregnancy has not been achieved after one year of trying, or if there is a known medical factor influencing fertility (e.g., endometriosis or reduced sperm quality).
  • Family situation: Some regions offer publicly funded IVF only if the couple does not already have a child together. Requirements for single applicants may also vary.
  • Lifestyle factors: Many regions require the patient (and partner, if applicable) to be non-smokers and to be within a recommended BMI range, as these factors significantly influence treatment outcomes.

How the treatment path works

Medical consultation and fertility assessment

A thorough medical review is conducted, including blood tests, ultrasound examinations, and a health questionnaire. Based on the findings, an individualised treatment plan is created.

Ovarian stimulation

Hormonal medication is used to stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple mature follicles.

Egg retrieval

When follicles have reached the correct stage, the eggs are collected through a minor procedure performed under light sedation or local anaesthesia.

Fertilisation

Depending on the clinical indication, fertilisation is performed either via conventional IVF or ICSI, where a single sperm cell is injected directly into each mature egg.

Embryo transfer

A single high-quality embryo is transferred into the uterus 2–5 days after retrieval.

Pregnancy test

Approximately two weeks later, a blood or urine test is performed to determine the outcome of the cycle.

Why some patients choose private treatment instead

Although region-funded treatment is an excellent option for many, private IVF can offer additional benefits:

  • Shorter waiting times and faster access to treatment
  • More flexibility with scheduling and treatment planning
  • Closer individual follow-up and more customised care
  • A wider selection of advanced techniques, depending on need
  • Continuity and personalised support throughout the journey
