Every year, hundreds of fertility treatments are carried out using donated reproductive cells—most commonly donated sperm.
At Ovumia, we have more than 25 years of experience with these treatments, and we understand how essential safety, empathy, and professionalism are throughout the entire process.
Treatment with donated reproductive cells involves the use of sperm from a voluntary, carefully screened donor.
Before treatment begins, a consultation with a psychologist or fertility specialist is always included, where the legal, psychological, and ethical aspects of the treatment are discussed.
Throughout the entire process, you are supported by an experienced team including a physician, embryologist, and your own nurse.
They are here to guide you, answer your questions, and ensure that you feel safe and supported—from the first appointment to the pregnancy test.
At Ovumia, we understand that the need for donated sperm can look different for everyone—and our goal is always the same: to help you have your child.

Our sperm donors are healthy men between 20 and 45 years of age who have voluntarily chosen to help others become parents.
They undergo extensive medical, genetic, and psychological screening to ensure both good health and suitability as donors.
All donors are registered and non-anonymous, which means that children born through donated reproductive cells have the right—when they are mature enough—to learn the donor’s identity.
A single donor may contribute to children in a maximum of six families in Sweden.
If a suitable donor is not available in Ovumia’s own sperm bank in Finland, sperm can be ordered from our international partner organisations, such as European Sperm Bank or Cryos International.
In these cases as well, donor information is registered so that the child later has the right to access information about their biological origin.
Insemination is most often the first treatment option when donated sperm is used.
The outcome is particularly influenced by the woman’s age and other fertility-related factors.
Before treatment begins, the physician may recommend checking the patency of the fallopian tubes.
The chance of pregnancy with insemination is approximately 16–18% per attempt, and most pregnancies occur within 3–4 treatment cycles.
For single women and female couples, results are often even better, as the absence of sperm is frequently the only cause of infertility.
The cost of insemination with donated sperm consists of the price of the sperm sample and the treatment itself.
In some cases, ultrasound monitoring is needed to time ovulation, but often a home ovulation test is sufficient.
Inseminations are performed by fertility specialists and, at some of our clinics, also by specially trained midwives.
If pregnancy is not achieved after several attempts, the next step—decided together with the physician—is usually in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
With IVF, the chance of pregnancy per embryo transfer is approximately 30–40%.
At the first visit, your general health and any previous pregnancies are reviewed. If needed, an examination is performed to check whether the fallopian tubes are open (HSSG). Based on the results, a preliminary treatment plan is created.
According to Swedish law, everyone seeking treatment with donated reproductive cells must undergo a combined medical and psychological assessment.
The consultation is intended to provide support and reassurance, and to address important questions about the future, the child, and family formation.
Once the assessment is complete, our physicians select a suitable donor. The details of the treatment, timeline, and any medication are then planned.
The fertility treatment itself is carried out according to plan—either as insemination or, if needed, IVF.
If insemination does not result in pregnancy, treatment can continue with in vitro fertilisation.
The length of treatment varies, but for single women and female couples, the process usually takes between 3 and 12 months.
