Longing for a child is a deeply personal and often emotional journey. For some, the path to parenthood becomes more complex, and when neither one’s own eggs nor sperm can be used, double donation—a unique gift from both egg and sperm donors—can be the solution that opens the door to a long-awaited family.
At Ovumia Stockholm, you are met by a team that understands the emotions and challenges you may be facing. We offer a safe, compassionate, and scientifically grounded path forward, guiding you through every step toward your greatest dream.
Double donation is an IVF treatment in which both the egg and the sperm come from donors. This means that the child will not have a genetic connection to the intended parent or parents. At the same time, the treatment offers a unique opportunity for heterosexual couples, female same-sex couples, and single women who, for medical reasons, cannot use their own reproductive cells.
At Ovumia Stockholm, we combine an extensive donor bank with long-standing experience and specialist expertise. Our carefully selected egg and sperm donors undergo thorough medical examinations, genetic screening, and personal interviews. This ensures that we can offer donors in good health and without known hereditary conditions. Our egg donors are between 23 and 35 years of age, and our sperm donors are between 18 and 45 years of age.
In Sweden, only open donation is permitted, meaning that the child has the right to learn the donors’ identities once they reach a mature age. It is important to note, however, that neither the child nor the donors have any legal or financial obligations toward one another.
To undergo double donation, the woman must be of reproductive age and not have reached the age of 46. In addition, a psychosocial assessment with a psychologist or behavioural specialist is always included. This provides an opportunity to discuss emotions, thoughts, and considerations related to the treatment and the future. If you are a couple, both partners are required to participate in the counselling and assessment process.
We get to know you and review your medical circumstances, previous treatments, and answer all your questions.
An in-depth psychosocial assessment is carried out, giving you space to reflect on the decision and what it means for you.
We work with both our own and external sperm banks, as well as our own egg bank, offering carefully screened, high-quality donors. According to Swedish legislation, you cannot choose the donor yourselves; the physician makes the selection based on your characteristics. This is done to support resemblance between the child and their parent(s).
Eggs from the donor are fertilised with donated sperm in our state-of-the-art laboratory using ICSI, where a single sperm is injected directly into the egg. The embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage, and those that reach sufficient quality may be frozen.
One embryo is thawed and transferred to the uterus. Treatment begins approximately three weeks beforehand with hormone tablets and continues with vaginal hormone support, which is also used after the transfer.
A pregnancy test is performed after about two weeks. Regardless of the result, we remain available to provide support, guidance, and to plan the next steps together with you.
In pregnancies achieved with donated eggs, there is a slightly increased risk of high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia, particularly in women over the age of 40. We always discuss this carefully during the medical consultation so that you feel well informed and reassured.
Whether you are a couple or a single woman considering double donation in Sweden, we are here to answer all your questions and help you plan the next steps.
