What does fertility treatment involve?

The most common fertility treatments in the Nordic countries

There are several ways to support the body on the path toward pregnancy. Which method is best for you is determined after a careful assessment of your health, age, and fertility factors.

Common treatment options at Ovumia:

  • Ovulation induction (OI) – if ovulation does not occur regularly, it can be stimulated with medication, often in tablet form.
  • Insemination (IUI) – selected, prepared sperm are placed into the uterus with a thin catheter at the time of ovulation.
  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF) – after hormone stimulation, eggs are collected, fertilised in the laboratory, and the embryo is transferred to the uterus.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) – a single sperm is injected directly into the egg, particularly effective in cases of reduced sperm quality.
  • Treatment with donated reproductive cells – donated eggs or sperm are used when own reproductive cells cannot be used.
  • Frozen embryo transfer (FET) – embryos from previous treatments can be frozen and transferred later without new hormone stimulation.

How do I know which fertility treatment is right for me?

You don’t need to know in advance – that’s our job to guide you.

At your first visit, the physician carries out a thorough review of your health and the factors affecting fertility.

A fertility specialist then makes an individual assessment and creates a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. In some cases, no treatment is needed right away—sometimes we recommend continuing to try naturally for a while longer.

During the first visit, you will also meet our care team and have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

When should you seek fertility treatment?

Which factors affect the outcome of fertility treatment?

The causes of infertility are often divided into three main groups:
female factors, male factors, and shared or unexplained factors—approximately one third each.

Several factors influence the likelihood of success:

  • Female age – fertility gradually declines after the age of 35.
  • Male age – fertility most often decreases after the age of 50.
  • Weight – both underweight and overweight can make it harder to conceive and increase the risk of complications.
  • Medical conditions such as diabetes, untreated coeliac disease, autoimmune disorders, endometriosis, or PCOS.
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and high stress levels.
  • Sometimes there is no clear cause – the difficulty may lie in the interaction between egg and sperm.
