Social egg freezing – preserving fertility for the future

Do you dream of having children—but not right now?
Social egg freezing is a modern and effective way to give yourself more options for the future. By freezing your eggs while you are younger, you can increase the chance of having children later in life, when the timing and your life situation feel right.

At Ovumia, you receive safe, individually tailored care from experienced specialists—combined with a warm, professional approach.

Proactive egg freezing is available for women until the age of 38.

What does social egg freezing involve?

When is age most favourable?

What happens before egg freezing?

At the first visit, you will go through:

You will also have the opportunity to speak with a psychologist or therapist, which many find valuable, as the decision can bring up mixed emotions—completely normal in this situation.

  • Your fertility status (ultrasound and possibly an AMH test)
  • Your health and medical background
  • How the process works
  • What the results may realistically mean

How does the treatment work?

Hormone stimulation (10–14 days)

The ovaries are stimulated with individually tailored hormone treatment so that multiple eggs can mature.

Ultrasound monitoring

We monitor follicle development and determine the optimal timing for egg retrieval.

Egg retrieval (OPU)

  • Takes about 15 minutes
  • Performed with pain relief, sedation if needed, and local anaesthesia
  • You may bring a support person
  • Rest at the clinic for 1–2 hours afterwards
  • Most people experience the procedure as uncomplicated

The egg retrieval procedure does not affect the natural function of your ovarian reserve and does not accelerate menopause.

After the treatment

Afterwards, you will receive:

Often, 1–3 cycles are recommended to reach a sufficient number of frozen eggs.

  • A review of the number of mature eggs collected
  • A realistic estimate of your future chances of pregnancy
  • Guidance on whether an additional cycle may be recommended (which is common after the age of 35)

The psychological aspect – completely normal feelings

Social egg freezing often brings up questions and emotions, such as:

  • Uncertainty about future family plans
  • Stress related to age or timing
  • Grief over a relationship that did not turn out as hoped
  • Frustration about not being “ready at the right time”

Talking with a psychologist can:

  • Help you organise your thoughts
  • Provide emotional support
  • Reduce feelings of guilt or worry
  • Strengthen the sense that you are making an active and thoughtful choice

How are frozen eggs used later on?

What are the chances of having a child?

The likelihood mainly depends on:

  1. Age at the time of egg freezing
  2. Number of eggs frozen
  3. The biological quality of the eggs

As mentioned above:

  • Age 30–34 + 20 frozen eggs → approx. 70–80% chance of having a child
  • Age 35–37 + 20 frozen eggs → approx. 55–65% chance
  • Younger age → more mature eggs and higher quality
  • After the age of 38, more cycles are often needed

The method – why egg freezing works

Let’s plan a safe and realistic strategy

Every person has different circumstances. We make an individual assessment of:

  • how many eggs may be needed
  • fertility status
  • time perspective
  • medical and emotional factors

The goal is to give you the best possible foundation for future family planning—in a safe, thoughtful, and supportive way.
