Semen analysis – a key part of fertility assessment

A semen analysis is recommended if:

• Pregnancy has not been achieved after about one year of trying
• You want an indication of your fertility for future planning
• You are about to start fertility treatment
• You have had testicular surgery, infections, or other medical risk factors
• You have previously had a semen sample with abnormal results

The examination is simple, quick, and completely painless. This is how the sample is collected:

• The semen sample is provided in a private room at the clinic, or at home according to instructions
• The sample is collected by masturbation directly into a sterile container provided by us
• For best quality, you should avoid ejaculation for 1–2 days before the test

In the laboratory

Our embryologists analyse the sample promptly. Results are usually ready the same day and are reviewed with you in a consultation with one of our specialists.
If sperm cannot be obtained in the sample—if sperm are absent (for example after sterilisation) or if sample collection is difficult—sperm can sometimes be retrieved using a minor surgical procedure called TESA.

To ensure the most reliable results possible, we recommend that you:

• Abstain from ejaculation for 1–2 days
• Avoid alcohol for 2–3 days beforehand
• Avoid fever, saunas, and high heat during the week before the test
• Try to reduce stress and get adequate sleep
