Sperm production continues throughout life, but certain changes can affect fertility over time. Sperm motility and DNA quality may gradually decline, and health and lifestyle often play a greater role as men get older. However, it is a common misconception that the normal age-related decline in testosterone impairs sperm production.
In healthy men, the body’s own testosterone levels are usually sufficient to maintain sperm production, even though levels may decrease slightly with age.
Important to know about testosterone treatment
Supplemental testosterone (for example as hormone therapy, doping substances, or supplements purchased online) can have the opposite effect. External testosterone can significantly suppress—or even completely stop—the body’s own sperm production. This is a common cause of low sperm counts in men today. If you are using testosterone or similar substances—or have done so in the past—we are happy to discuss how this may affect fertility and what alternatives are available.
